This oil painting of Captain John Stobo was purchased from a direct descendant of the Stobo family living in Glasgow. After restoration it was put on display in the Museum in March 2008. John Stobo was commissioned from the ranks. He was appointed Quartermaster in 1799, Adjutant in 1800 and commissioned Lieutenant in June 1803, at which time, according to the Muster Roll of 24th October 1803, he was recruiting in Kilmarnock. Later, he retired to Tarbolton in Ayrshire where he died in 1838. The uniform coatee worn by Stobo in the painting is of the style worn by officers of the Royal Scots Greys 1799-1811 and the coatee buttons are clearly marked 2D (2nd Dragoons).

John Stobo’s younger brother, Thomas, also served in the Regiment and was noted as being the oldest Grey at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815; he died on 24th November 1852 and was buried in the same grave as his elder brother.
